Success Story

Norton Healthcare

Highly regarded nonprofit health system embarks on a bold strategic plan to solidify its status as a top organization for delivery of quality, patient-centered care.

The Situation

For 130 years, Norton Healthcare has honored its deep commitment to providing quality care throughout Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and beyond to all who need it—from the most delicate premature infants to community elders, and everyone in between. Norton’s leadership understood that to build on the organization’s industry accolades and prepare for the future, they needed to make significant investments in patient care, facilities, education, and research. Norton Healthcare also benefits from a great deal of support within the greater Louisville community and a civic commitment to improving access to care. But like many nonprofits, Norton Healthcare remains sensitive to donor fatigue and competing campaigns.

The Solution

Graham-Pelton stepped in to provide Campaign Preparation Services, including a Campaign Readiness Assessment and Planning Study, Case for Support Development and a Visioning Session, and Board Campaign Readiness Services. We took a critical look at the ability of Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s Hospital to mount a comprehensive, seven-year campaign to focus on Clinical Care, Facilities, Education, Research, and Endowment, with specific emphasis on pediatrics, cancer, cardiovascular care, neurosciences, diabetes and endocrinology, orthopedics, and women’s care.

Following the completion of the Planning Study, we were enlisted to conduct a database audit and provide campaign counsel to help develop and facilitate campaign planning. To begin, we recommended an extended Institutional Planning Phase, in which Norton leadership would collaborate to determine the most urgent needs and ability to achieve philanthropic success, and to refine the case for support with an emphasis on the impact on the wider community. Graham-Pelton has also recommended focusing on building the culture of philanthropy within the organization and expanding the partnership between the Foundation, physicians, and Hospital leadership.

The Success

Graham-Pelton is currently providing quiet phase campaign counsel to Norton Healthcare, focusing on continued staff coaching and training, informing top prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies, and supporting the Campaign Plan. We are also providing high-level strategic counsel to the database administrator as he implements recommendations provided by us in the recent database audit roadmap.

You can raise more money. We can show you how.
